Glovely Advice:

Do NOT pay $700 for gloves, ladies! I know Louis Vuitton’s have been beautiful these past few seasons, particularly the sheer ones. Nonetheless, this is one of those areas (unlike shoes and handbags) where it is perfectly permissible to cut corners. Caroline Amato, for example, makes gorgeous affordable gloves. Or simply browse the accessories at your local department store for amazing finds. For chiffon and lace, go pageant fabulous. If your hands are small enough, you might have good luck finding vintage gloves on ebay or in consignment stores.

Glove Etiquette:

  • I don’t care how dainty the glove, you must remove it before dialing or texting. It is simply unsightly to do otherwise.

  • Never pull your gloves off in one swift motion or (God forbid) use your teeth to aid you in their removal. Gloves should be plucked off, one finger at a time, until they slide off the hand effortlessly. Act like a barbarian and you will destroy your whole look!

  • Never hold your gloves in your mouth (I see this too often!) or under your arm. Don’t let them hang out of your pocket while you are browsing in a boutique. Tuck them neatly in your handbag.

  • Your glove is not a handkerchief. Enough said.

  • It is perfectly acceptable to wear delicate gloves at the dining table, as long as they are removed (discreetly, but of course) before dinner arrives. I do not find it unsightly for a woman to hold her cocktail in a gloved hand. In fact, it’s rather sexy. But let me catch you buttering your bread while glove-clad and I will confiscate them (both the carbs and the offending accessory).

  • Never wear a dirty glove. And have all your leather and suede gloves dry-cleaned at the close of the season. Do not store in air-tight containers, as leather is meant to breathe or it will dry out.

  • Mittens should only be worn by schoolchildren and snowboarders UNLESS you have a heavenly suede, fur-lined pair, preferably in a bright blue or magenta. If you are going to take a fashion risk, at least have the gumption to call attention to it! [See PPQ below}

Post Script: As a lovely alternative to gloves, I am single-handedly trying to revive the muff. A sumptuous fur is the ideal way to dress up your boring black wool coat for a night at the opera. See J. Mendel's version at right, from the Fall 2008 Runway Show.
